Mother of the Bride

What are the color restrictions surrounding the mother of the bride's dress?

Traditionally, avoiding dresses in the white, ivory, and champagne color family (that match the bride's wedding gown), black gowns (that can suggest mourning) and red gowns(or similarly "flashy" shades) is the standard.  There are often cultural traditions that can influence the choice of color.

Take Color Cues from the Wedding Party. Traditionally, the mother of the bride's dress should complement the wedding party's colors (though not necessary match). Therefore, it's best to wait until your daughter chooses the bridesmaids' dresses to begin shopping.

Mother of the Groom

Because the mother of the groom isn't part of the bridal party, she should avoid choosing a dress in the same color as the bridesmaids' attire, the mother of the bride's dress, or the wedding gown.

Wear a dress in a color, style, and length that goes with, but does not exactly match, the mother of the bride's dress and the bridesmaids' dresses. ... Choose a dress appropriate for the formality of the wedding. Do not wear black unless it is a formal wedding and has been approved by the bride and groom.
